The Highland Park Police Department reminds members of the community to take the following steps to reduce the likelihood of being burglarized.
- Lock all doors with adequate hardware such as deadbolts
- Maintain landscaping to reduce the ability of criminals approaching your residence without being noticed
- Suspend the delivery of newspapers and mail while away or have a friend or neighbor collect them daily to avoid the appearance that no one is home
- Adequately illuminate your house and use timers for interior lights
- Inform trusted neighbors that you are out of town and ask to keep an eye on your house
- If you have an alarm system, make sure it is on and working properly and that your key holder list is current with your alarm monitoring provider
- Consider installing home monitoring systems and cameras that alert you when someone has entered your home or property
