Special Programs
In addition to responding to emergencies, the Highland Park
Fire Department has several programs designed to inform
citizens and
prevent accidents.
Fire Prevention Week
In 2009, National Fire Prevention Week is October 4th through October
10th. Every year, Fire Prevention Week is always the week containing
October 8th, which was the date of the Great Chicago Fire in
1871. Highland Park Fire Prevention Week activities include fire
safety messages presented in classrooms throughout the City,
public presentations regarding fire safety, and media reminders
of the importance of fire safety throughout the year.
Fourth of July
The Highland Park Fire Department is an annual participant in the
Fourth of July Parade, usually showcasing the Department's newest
pieces of equipment.
The Fire Department also stands-by at the annual City fireworks
display at dusk on the 4th. All citizens are reminded that individual
use of fireworks and sparklers is prohibited by City ordinance
due to the dangerous nature of the practice. Many injuries and
fires are caused annually throughout the country by stray fireworks
set-off by individuals. Those who wish to enjoy fireworks are advised
to attend professional public displays such as the one presented
annually by the City of Highland Park.
Public Displays
The Fire Department staffs public displays at many of the community
events during the course of the year. Such displays include literature
on fire safety and health, firefighters on-hand to answer questions,
and a display or presentation regarding a particular topic.
Event sponsors that wish to have a Fire Department display can
call for more information, during business hours at 847-433-3110.
