Green Alliance

The Green Alliance is a group of representatives from across the community whose efforts are dedicated to promoting a sustainable life in Highland Park. The City, along with the Green Alliance, has written a sustainability plan with the goal being to implement changes by 2030. The 2030 timeframe was chosen to allow some creativity in the visioning process and realize that major changes in Highland Park will likely take time. A 2030 time horizon takes the middle ground in balancing creativity and a sense of urgency, particularly with interim five-year targets. Some of the most ambitious and defining objectives presented in the Plan include:

Energy & Building Environment - Improve building energy efficiency by 50% by 2030 and source at least 50% of its heat and power from sustainable energy sources by 2030.

Mobility - Decrease household vehicle miles traveled to 50% below 2008 levels by 2030.

Materials - Increase recycling rates by 50% by 2020 and reduce household waste generation by 50% below 2008 levels by 2020.

Water - Reduce water consumption community-wide by 30% below 2008 levels by 2030.

Ecosystems - Increase habitat by 100 acres by 2020 and achieve 30% market share for local and organic produce by 2030 through direct farmer-to-consumer sales and grocery stores.
