Clarification of Unrelated Public Safety Incidents

September 22, 2022 – The City has received several inquiries regarding recent public safety incidents, and would like to provide clarification to the community. Although the City cannot provide specific details concerning active investigations, the individuals who were allegedly involved in the incident at Fort Sheridan beach on Saturday, September 17 had no connection to the incident that occurred on the 1300 block of St. Johns Avenue on Friday, September 16. These are two separate incidents.

The incident on Saturday, September 17 did not occur within the jurisdiction of the City of Highland Park. The Highland Park Police Department was not notified of the incident at Fort Sheridan Beach until an emergency call for service was routed to Highland Park Dispatch at 5:10 AM on Saturday, September 17, with a report of an unconscious person on Lake Michigan’s shoreline. Highland Park Police did not receive any reports of altercation or noise complaints at Fort Sheridan beach. After Highland Park officers responded, they discovered this incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Lake County Forest Preserve, and immediately contacted Lake County Forest Preserve Police, which is currently the agency responsible for investigating the matter.
