Temporary Memorial Update

Desplácese para leer este artículo en español.

Eight weeks ago, our community experienced a violent tragedy. As we continue to navigate this difficult period we have come together in many ways as a community. City Council and staff are guided by best practices shared by the Department of Justice Office of Victims of Crime and other communities that have experienced similar tragedies.

The temporary memorials and memorial art installation at St. Johns and Central have helped many move through their grief, but are re-traumatizing for others to experience. With this in mind and as the change of season approaches, the City will begin a process to scale back these temporary memorials, working with the archivist from the library to ensure that appropriate materials are preserved and maintained.

The City is committed to offering a shared space for the community to grieve while we begin the process of developing a permanent memorial. We will discuss this process and provide more information at an upcoming Committee meeting of the City Council on Monday, September 27, 2022.

Planning for a Permanent Memorial
Because our painful experience is still so recent, our community needs time before embarking on the important process of planning and creating a permanent memorial to the victims of this senseless tragedy. This is a process that must be approached with care, sensitivity, and respect, particularly given that some victims of the shooting remain in the hospital, recovering from life-altering injuries.
