8/11/21: Storm Impacts

August 11 Power Outage Status

The City continues to remain in contact with ComEd as they work to resolve the power outage that continues to impact approximately 447 customers in Highland Park. Storms on the evening of August 10 and the morning of August 11 caused more than 290,000 customers throughout the region to be without power. Service to approximately 1,353 Highland Park customers who were previously without power has been restored.

ComEd crews will work throughout the evening to restore service as quickly as possible. For updates regarding power outages, visit comed.com/outagemap. For questions regarding this process, please call ComEd at 1.800.EDISON1.

Overnight Cooling Centers

If you are without power tonight, please consider visiting the cooling center at Makom Solel Lakeside (1301 Clavey Rd.) Please contact the public safety non-emergency line at 847.432.7730 so that they may advise Makom Solel Lakeside that you will be arriving on site. Callers will then receive further information about accessing the cooling center.

Individuals who plan to spend the night at Makom Solel Lakeside should bring their own pillows, blankets, and sleeping bags/pads as the synagogue is not equipped for overnight guests.

The City appreciates the partnership of Makom Solel Lakeside in serving our community as a cooling center this evening.

Severe Weather Threat Continues

The National Weather Service advises that additional thunderstorms are expected tonight. A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Lake County and will remain in effect until 2:00 AM. Per the NWS, damaging winds, hail, torrential downpours, and even a brief tornado may occur with the strongest storms; downed tree limbs and further power outages are possible.

Tree Limbs & Debris

If you observe a tree limb, debris, or other obstruction in the roadway or public right-of-way, contact Public Works at 847.432.0807, or submit a service ticket at cityhpil.com/service.

To report tree issues along utility lines, please contact ComEd at 1.800.EDISON.1.

For information regarding the removal of tree limbs or other debris on private property, please contact Lakeshore Recycling Services. LRS will accept landscape waste as part of the landscape waste program. Learn more at lrsrecycles.com, or call 773.685.8811.

The City is aware that some residents have experienced interruptions in their phone, cell phone, or internet service. Please continue to report these issues to your provider.

Aug. 11, 2021: City Responds to Storm Damage

Last night's storms resulted in tree damage, wind-blown debris, and power outages across the region. Crews from ComEd and City personnel from Public Works, Police, and Fire are addressing negative impacts resulting from this storm.

The City is connecting with ComEd for regular updates regarding the restoration of power to affected homes and is in regular communication with sister governments and neighboring communities.

Power Outages

ComEd is aware of approximately 1,800 customers without power in Highland Park. Outages are widespread, and over 200,000 customers were affected in our region. As of 9:00 AM on August 11, ComEd anticipates restoring power to most customers by 11 PM tonight, or by 3 PM Friday. For updates regarding power outages, visit comed.com/outagemap. Report any downed power lines at comed.com/report; do not touch, move, or drive over any downed power lines.

Cooling Centers

Excessive heat is forecast for today, with the heat index already above 100°. If you are without power, please consider visiting the following cooling centers:

  • Recreation Center of Highland Park (1207 Park Ave. W.; 5:30 AM - 7:30 PM; closed August 13);
  • Highland Park Public Library (494 Laurel Ave.; 9AM - 9 PM);
  • City Hall (1707 St. Johns Ave.; 8 AM - 5 PM).

Please note that all locations require visitors to wear face coverings while indoors.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning In Effect

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 10:45 AM on August 11. A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Lake County, in effect until 1 PM on August 11. The storm system moving east this morning is capable of producing 75 mph gusts and has already produced wind damage. The system is likely to continue producing wind damage over the next few hours. Scattered hail is also possible.

There is an additional threat of severe weather anticipated for the evening of August 11. Current forecasts indicate that a line of storms with damaging winds strong enough to uproot trees and produce torrential downpours is possible. The storm window for Lake County is estimated at 7 - 11 PM on August 11.

FEMA Test Planned for August 11

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in coordination with the FCC, will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) today, Wednesday, August 11.

This national test will consist of two portions, testing WEA and EAS capabilities. Both tests will begin at 1:20 PM on Wednesday, Aug. 11. The EAS test will send a test alert to televisions and radios. The WEA portion of the test will be directed only to consumer cellphones where the subscriber has opted-in to receive test messages.
