The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) has announced that its Residential Electronics Recycling Program will remain operational throughout 2017. Residents will continue to be able to recycle electronic waste at the Highland Park recycling facility, which is open year-round on Tuesdays and on the first Saturday of each month from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM at 1180 Half Day Road. “The City of Highland Park, the Village of Grayslake and the Townships of Cuba and Grant have been instrumental serving Lake County as regional collection sites. In 2016 these four sites have shouldered the burden of collecting nearly 4 millionpoundof consumer electronics,” stated Peter Adrian, SWALCO’s Recycling Coordinator stated. Municipalities are not mandated by State law to provide electronics collection services, but since 2010 numerous county and municipal governments have worked together to provide collection services for residents. Last March, an emergency Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) meeting took place and declared the closing of five electronic recycling facilities due to lack of funds. The final closing date was intended to take place in May of 2016. The lack of recycling options for residents led 15 Lake County units of local government to donate $62,000 in order to keep the program operating through the end of 2016. The SWALCO Board of Directors, which includes representatives from the City of Highland Park, met in June; at that time they determined the effort to amend the Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act was successful and the facilities will be open during the 2017 year. SWALCO plans and organizes the management of solid waste in an environmentally and economically sound manner. Specifically, SWALCO deals with "municipal waste," which refers to garbage, general household and commercial waste, industrial lunchroom or office waste, landscape waste, and construction or demolition debris. In addition to the Electronics Recycling Center staying open, the City’s waste hauling provider, Lakeshore Recycling Services (LRS), offers pick-up of recyclable electronics for all residents. Residents may place one large or three small electronic waste items curbside during the first waste pickup of every month. LRS will collect and properly dispose of the electronic waste at no additional charge.
