Bicycle Rules of the Road

When riding your bicycle on a roadway, you must obey the same traffic laws that apply to vehicular motorists. This means you must stop at red lights and stop signs, and mind all other traffic signs. Here are some additional rules of the road for bikers:
  • Bicyclists must ride in the same direction as other traffic.
  • Bicyclists may only ride 2 abreast on a public roadway except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for their exclusive use.
  • Bicyclists must yield the right of way to pedestrians at crosswalks.
  • When approaching a pedestrian from behind, slow down and give an audible signal to alert them of your presence before passing them.
