The City has already implemented or is currently engaged in developing policies and practices that are consistent with the goals of the 8 Can’t Wait movement. These include:
- Prohibitions on chokeholds
- Prohibitions on shooting at moving vehicles
- De-escalation training
- Use of force
- Duty to intervene
- Exhausting all other means and warnings before shooting, when at all possible
- Comprehensive reporting
The Police Department employs in-car cameras as well as camera-equipped tasers. Body Worn Cameras are included in the City’s Capital Improvement Plan at an estimated initial investment of approximately $215,000, with a total multi-year investment of approximately $575,000. The City evaluates every initiative within its budgets before it is included in the budget and before any funds are expended. The budget process is an approximate eight-month process and the schedule can be found on the City’s web site.
