SCHOOL SAFETY/EDUCATION OFFICER Updated June 16, 2006

The Police Department has developed a partnership with North Shore School District #112. Together they share the common goals of educating and exposing the community's children to the many facets of personal safety and crime prevention.

The School Safety Program provides children with the opportunity to develop safety skills in areas ranging from identifying a police officer, the proper utilization of 9-1-1, pedestrian and bicycle safety, school bus safety and being home alone. Basic safety principles also include: an explanation of curfew, shoplifting, criminal damage to property and ways in which to seek help for personal problems.

The School Safety Officer incorporates current community problems into the curriculum to promote active participation with all students. Students are encouraged to offer their experiences, observations and ideas, on possible solutions to questions and problems they may encountered throughout the community.

It is the goal of the School Safety/Education's Program to serve as a focus for youth involvement, because the entire community is worried about crime and safety. Many of our students and young people can perform the same tasks as adult volunteers in our community.

The Highland Park Police Department believes that our young people can and should be community resources - they can make substantial contributions. Many adults are astonished to learn that teenagers see crime as a serious community problem. Much like their parents, they want to go to "schools they can be proud of" and live in a "crime free" community. The Police Department uses crime prevention as an educational starting point for community development, and strengthening the partnership with our community.
