Student Commission Application - High School Juniors Only

Serving on a City commission is a great way for students to see democracy in action.  The City of Highland Park supports education of tomorrow’s leaders by providing an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to serve on a City commission for terms starting in January of junior year until graduation.  While you won’t be a voting member, you may have the opportunity to add your perspective to the commission discussions.

Carefully review the information below before applying. Your submission of this application indicates that you understand the time commitment involved and are willing to fulfill the requirements as a commission member if selected. Please visit the Boards & Commissions page prior to applying to learn more about each Commission.  Please note: only high school juniors who live in Highland Park are eligible to apply.


Roles and Responsibilities
  • Serve as non-voting member of commission, committee, task force or board
  • Abide by the City’s Appointed Official Guidelines
  • Meet expectations of other appointed officials, including generation of work ideas, participation in workgroups, and coordination of activity with your high school
  • Assist high school staff in recommendation of replacement if needed
  • Participate in a teacher-supervised independent study project related to work of commission, committee, task force, or board (optional)

Attendance
  • Abide by attendance policy codified in Chapter 33 of the Highland Park City Code
    • Absences during summer vacation shall be automatically considered as excused

Selection and Term
  • Local high school staff shall coordinate:
    • Solicitation of nominations from junior class for vacant and replacement student representative seats
    • Review of applications from nominees
  • Mayor recommends, and Council approves, student member
  • Student serves a term from January of his/her junior year through high school graduation
