RE: Traffic Commission Submittal Requests
Date: July 18, 2001

The standard procedure for a resident request for traffic control consideration to the Traffic Commission is listed below.

  1. Resident submits written request to staff liaison of the Traffic Commission
    1. Explain existing issue
    2. Clearly state desired action
  2. Staff liaison reviews request
    1. Acknowledgement to resident of receipt of request
    2. Add request to next available meeting agenda of Traffic Commission
    3. Inform resident of meeting date and request presence at meeting
  3. Depending on nature of request, staff places Traffic Commission notification sign at site of requested action
  4. At scheduled meeting, Commission hears residents concerns on issue and can:
    1. Motion to act on issue and recommend City Council consider request
      1. Motion passes: staff presents request at next available City Council meeting
      2. Motion fails: no action taken
    2. Request staff to collect additional information
      1. Information is collected and presented to Commission at future meeting
    3. No motion made, no action is taken
  5. If the motion passes (4(a.)i.), Traffic Commission recommendation is presented to City Council in the Council Action format and included on Council Agenda
    1. Traffic Commission meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month, City Council meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month. Due to the necessary preparation time of the Council Action and the short time frame between Traffic Commission meeting date and the first meeting of the month of the City Council, the Traffic Commission recommendation typically will be presented to City Council on the second Monday of the month following the Commission meeting.
  6. At scheduled meeting, City Council hears residents concerns on issue and can:
    1. Motion to act on issue
      1. Motion passes: Council directs Corporation Counsel to draft necessary ordinance
      2. Motion fails: no action taken
    2. Request Traffic Commission and staff collect additional information
      1. Information is collected, discussed at next Traffic Commission meeting and presented to City Council at future meeting
    3. No motion made, no action is taken
  7. If motion passes, Corporation Counsel drafts necessary ordinance for Council approval at next meeting
    1. Council reviews ordinance and motions to act
      1. Passes
        1. Add ordinance to City Code
        2. Direct staff to complete necessary actions (i.e., erect sign, stripe pavement)
      2. Does not pass: direction from City Council provided
