James Cady Ewell built War Memorial in 1926 to symbolize hope for peace in the world. The piece is dedicated to the 278 Highland Park residents who served in World War I.
War Memorial is constructed of bronze and granite and is 9 feet across by 5.5 feet tall by 2.5 feet thick. It is located in Memorial Park near Laurel, Prospect, and Linden Avenues.
James Cady Ewell was a well known painter-sculptor influenced by modernism and Art Deco style. He also designed bookplates, some of which are in the William Augustus Brewer Bookplate Collection of the University of Delaware, Newark.
