Peter Voulkos was a potter and sculptor born in Montana in 1924. He completed his Bachelors in Montana and his MFA in California. Voulkos is known for his large bronze public sculptures as well as being the leader of a revolution in ceramics.

The piece was dubbed "Miss Nitro" by the artist and was purchased from private donations and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. It was installed in 1973 and is located at the southeast corner of St. John's Ave. and Hazel Ave., in front of the Highland Park Library. The sculpture spans 70 feet and is 12 feet tall.

The piece was restored in the summer of 1991. The bronze surface had deteriorated and was treated with a black coating.
