Purpose
The City of Highland Park's Lakefront Commission was established in 1974 to protect and enhance the City's lakefront environment. Today, the Lakefront Commission weighs in on a variety of lakefront issues and gives input to the Zoning Board of Appeals, Plan Commission and the City Council regarding variations and amendments to the Steep Slope and Beach Structure Ordinances.
The Lakefront Commission strives to increase environmental awareness and appreciation for the City's ravine-bluff ecosystem by providing residents with helpful educational information:
Rules of Procedure
The Open Meeting Act requires the members of the Lakefront Commission to discuss public business in an open, public forum. This law requires that, whenever a gathering of three or more Commission members occurs during which public business is discussed, such meetings be advertised (through a posted agenda) and be open to the public.
Membership
The Lakefront Commission consists of seven voting members, all of whom are appointed by the Mayor with the consent of the City Council. The seven members are Highland Park residents and are appointed for terms of four years and may be reappointed to a second consecutive four-year term. Additionally, there are two are non-voting ex-officio representatives of the City Council and Park District.
