OZONE ACTION DAYS Updated June 16, 2006

10 Ways to Reduce Ozone
Hot, sunny summer days with little or no wind pose a health threat to young and old alike, because such weather conditions contribute to the production of a ground level pollutant known as ozone. Ozone is an irritant that has been known to cause respiratory distress, exacerbate lung conditions, and cause permanent lung tissue damage. To help minimize the impact of ozone, residents can adopt the following practices, especially when Ozone Action Alerts are declared:

  • Limit automobile driving whenever possible – try to rideshare, carpool, walk, or bicycle;
  • If possible, use public transportation;
  • Avoid excessive car idling and jack rabbit starts;
  • Refuel cars after 7:00 PM;
  • Avoid using gasoline-powered recreational vehicles;
  • Defer lawn mowing and gardening chores that use gasoline-powered equipment;
  • Postpone oil-based paint and solvent use;
  • Barbecue with electric charcoal starters instead of using fluid starters;
  • Defer use of household consumer products that release fumes or evaporate easily, and
    Reduce home electricity consumption, wherever possible.
