Overview
The Highland Park Senior Center is a Division of the City of Highland Park created
in 1976 to meet the needs of the community’s senior population. The Senior
Center is funded by the City of Highland Park. Membership fees, registration
fees, corporate donations and private donations are additional sources of revenue.
A private residence, built in 1929 by General Robert E. Wood, was
purchased to serve as the site of the Senior Center. The building
was renovated, providing a warm and comfortable atmosphere.
The Division of Senior Services provides health, recreational, cultural,
educational, and counseling services to the City’s senior population.
The Division also serves as a resource and advocate in areas of importance
to the well-being of the senior community, with primary attention
given to transportation, housing, and personal safety. All programs
are available to individuals age 50 and over. A nominal membership
fee is required for participation in many of the free programs. However,
all residents are welcome to participate in fee-based programming.
A wide array of programming for a membership that spans five decades
is provided. Educational lectures, social events, luncheons, classes
in a variety of areas of interest, a wide selection of exercise classes,
trips and tours, and intergenerational programs are offered throughout
the year. In additional, social services including counseling, in-home
visits, hospital visits, a hospital equipment loan closet, a friendly
visitor program, a telephone reassurance program, and informational
and referral services are open to the entire community on a no-fee
basis. The Senior Center also provides an employment referral service
and a comprehensive volunteer program. Transportation is a priority,
and the Senior Center works with the Transit Division and Moraine
Township to provide The Senior Connector and the Taxi Subsidy programs.
