| The office and duties
of the City Clerk are established by state statute and local ordinance
and cover a host of municipal responsibilities. Primary among these
are the maintenance of official records and documents, custody
of the City seal, licensing, attendance at and recording of council
proceedings, administration of oaths, attestation and certification
of documents, publication
of ordinances, and compliance with the
Freedom of Information and Open Meetings Act.
Although the Illinois Legislature has established the County
as the primary election authority, the City Clerk continues
to serve as the Local Election Official and is responsible for
voter
registration and municipal election
duties pertaining to nomination petitions, ballots, and election
results.
