Acceptable Household Garbage

Refuse is defined to include domestic garbage, ashes and other household trash and decaying animal and vegetable wastes resulting from the handling, preparation, cooking and consumption of food. Illinois law prohibits the disposal of certain waste in landfills. In addition, other items should be disposed of by other methods. Please observe these regulations.

The following items are unacceptable:

  • Acids and poisons
  • Automobile Batteries and their equivalents
  • Automobile tires
  • Automobile wheels and large parts
  • Explosive and volatile waste
  • Flammable waste
  • Gasoline, motor oil and similar automotive fluids
  • Riding lawn mowers and snow blowers
  • Toxic and hazardous waste
  • Tree trunks, stumps or branches exceeding 3 inches in diameter
  • Unhardened paint & other liquid wastes

This list is not all-inclusive. Please call Veolia's customer service line at (847) 272-4145 if you have any questions.

Other household hazardous waste, such as chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, oil, paint, varnishes, strippers and similar items should be used until completely emptied. The empty dry container may then be disposed of as refuse. DO NOT put such containers in recycling bins, even if they are rinsed out. It is unlawful to dump any liquid waste into sanitary or storm sewers.
