REFUSE & RECYCLING PROGRAM Updated October 22, 2009

The City of Highland Park has a contract with Veolia Environmental Services to provide residential refuse, yardwaste and recycling collection service. All single family residences, as well as those multi-family residences with individualized refuse collection, are served by Veolia. Refuse is collected at the back door, recyclables are collected at the top of the driveway and yardwaste is collected at the curb.

Residents are able to select between a volume-based refuse option in which the resident pays in proportion to the amount of waste they generate through a sticker system, or a subscription refuse option in which the resident is billed for service.

Residents are able to recycle the following items once per week: newspaper, aluminum beverage containers, bi-metal and metal food containers, #1 HDPE plastics, #2 PETE plastics, #3, #4, and #5 plastics, polystyrene rigid packing material, corrugated cardboard, chipboard, magazines, junk mail, clear, brown and green glass, office paper, telephone books, and craft paper.

For yardwaste collection, residents are required to use either biodegradable paper bags or reusable containers. Residents are required to purchase and place a sticker on each container of yardwaste in order for it to be collected. Stickers are available through local retailers, City Hall or Veolia.

REFUSE COLLECTION HOLIDAYS

The following holidays are recognized by Veolia Environmental Services as refuse collection holidays. Refuse is not collected on these days. Depending on the day of the week on which it falls, your collection may be delayed one day.

  1. New Years Day
  2. Memorial Day
  3. Independence Day
  4. Labor Day
  5. Thanksgiving Day
  6. Christmas Day
