Rain Barrel Program

rain barrel.png
The City of Highland Park (the City) promotes the use of green infrastructure in an effort to conserve water and improve on-site stormwater management. As part of the program, the City is selling a limited number of 55-gallon rain barrels to Highland Park residents for the subsidized price of $25.00 per barrel. The rain barrels with installation connections are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Rain barrels collect the water that runs off your roof down your downspout during rain events. Rather than going directly into the storm sewer system, the water is collected in the barrel for your use. The collected water can be used to water your plants and wash your car or lawn furniture.

Rain barrels may be purchased by completing a Rain Barrel Request Form at City Hall, 1707 St. Johns Avenue, or on the website at www.cityhpil.com/RainBarrel. Once you have filled out a form and submitted payment, you will receive a receipt, which you must bring to pick-up your rain barrel at the Highland Park Recycling Center, 1180 Half Day Road. The Recycling Center is open between 7:00 AM and 1:00 PM Tuesdays and the first Saturday of each month. Instructions for installation of your rain barrel will be included.

“This is an important step as we strive to continuously improve our area water quality in a cost-effective manner,” said City Manager Ghida S. Neukirch. “We encourage residents to participate in the Rain Barrel Program. This is a great opportunity to purchase a high-quality rain barrel for a fraction of the typical price.”

For additional information on the Rain Barrel Program, please contact Administrative Intern Marc Facchini at 847.926.1036 or mfacchini@cityhpil.com. The City will follow-up with rain barrel purchasers in late summer to evaluate the program. Information about the program can be found at www.cityhpil.com/RainBarrel.
